‘It was always ridiculous for Gordon Brown to claim that the security of the UK depended on allowing police to hold terrorism suspects for 42 days without charge. Now, as The Times reports that the 42-day plan is set to be defeated in the Lords and effectively abandoned, it is equally risible for Brown’s opponents to claim that keeping the current limit of a mere 28 days is a victory for civil liberties…’
