How a global pandemic can make you reassess things. That certainly seems to be true for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which calls for boycotts of Israeli goods, academic institutions and cultural institutions. This dodgy umbrella group seeks to ‘denormalise’ Israel by effectively singling out Israelis for collective punishment. But given the threat posed by coronavirus, its founder has been forced to concede that an Israeli-produced vaccine would be an exception.

On Sunday, while taking part in a webinar, Omar Bargouti said that while the coronavirus crisis should not become a ‘honeymoon’ for Israel, he didn’t have a problem with people taking advantage of its medical equipment and research. ‘If you use medical equipment from Israel – it’s not a problem. Cooperating with Israel against the virus – to begin with, we didn’t consider it normalisation.’ He claims this has always been BDS’s policy. How convenient.
