Was that really it? Today’s spring budget was UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s final chance to turn the economy around before the next General Election. His last chance to drag us out of the doldrums of low growth, squeezed incomes and lacklustre productivity. His last chance to try to coax disgruntled voters into sticking with the Tories. But beyond some tinkering with a few taxes here and there, there was the sum total of nothing that might breathe some life into our zombie economy. There was no sign of any new policies to quicken the pulses of the voters. Even as his party stares electoral oblivion in the face, Hunt stuck rigidly to the same economic orthodoxy that has trapped us in this doom-loop. The same technocratic consensus that has brought nothing but hardship and stagnation. This government’s attachment to the status quo will cost us all dearly.
