UKIP! The Musical begins as a biopic of Nigel Farage’s life, before switching gears into an alternate future where he is prime minister.

A bit like The Book of Mormon, UKIP! The Musical treats its subject with warmth and sympathy while making an attempt at understanding; it doesn’t club the audience over the head with its satire, but allows the absurd and ironic moments to speak for themselves.

Written by RADA graduates Cath Day and Jessica Williams, it’s also a superbly crafted musical, with catchy tunes and fabulous production numbers. Godfrey Bloom’s tribute to Bongo Bongo Land is a particular favourite.

Any show that can make a Fringe audience see Farage as a cuddly anti-hero is special indeed.

Christian Butler is a writer and musician based in London.

UKIP! The Musical is at theSpace @ Surgeons Hall until 29 August.
