Even the uber-woke are getting cancelled

The new editor of Teen Vogue has lost her job over some tweets she wrote when she was a teenager.

Alexi McCammond was accused of racism and homophobia for tweets she posted a decade ago, when she was just 17 years old.

The tweets say the kind of dumb stuff you might expect from a teenager. For instance, McCammond complained about her ‘stupid Asian’ teaching assistant and talked about ‘Googling how to not wake up with swollen Asian eyes’. She also tweeted ‘you’re so gay’ at someone. When a baseball umpire reportedly came out as gay, she tweeted: ‘Why is this “newsworthy?”’

The tweets have dogged McCammond for some time. She had already apologised for them earlier this month, and apologised again when she was fired. She had even apologised for them in 2019 when they first resurfaced.

But these multiple apologies were not enough. Staff at Teen Vogue were outraged by her appointment – and a chain of shops pulled its seven-figure advertising campaign when it learned of her appointment.

McCammond lasted only two weeks in the job. And now, the woman who hired her is fighting for her job, too, according to the New York Times – because she knew about McCammond’s tweets but hired her anyway.
