The Tories are currently in the process of choosing a new leader, though you can be forgiven for not noticing – or for averting your eyes on purpose. After all, Mel Stride, who was ousted earlier today, is not a name that tends to trouble the paper’s front pages or is likely to find a place even in the footnotes of the history books. Of course, the Conservative Party’s problem goes far deeper than the odd no-mark candidate. Its betrayal of voters when in government will not be quickly forgotten. This is a party that squandered a historic chance to reshape British politics. That trashed the economy with endless lockdowns and Net Zero zealotry. That posed as warriors against woke, while letting it run amok. The Tories have a mountain to climb if they want to earn a hearing.
